Had a few Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) this week, which is ironic seeing as our campaign is about parking charges this August.
One was about a man who had left his car at a garage for repair work, only to get a PCN. The client only knew because he received a letter through the post saying the discount period had passed and he must now pay in full.
He spoke to the garage who told him not to worry about it, and that they would appeal.
Next thing he knows, the client receives another letter from a debt collection agency demanding £400. The client came to us as he didn’t know what to do (we suggested requesting a statement from the garage to send to the parking company to strengthen his appeal).
Another one was about a client who received a PCN whilst he was driving a hire car, and was frustrated by the fact the hire car company only passed the notice on after the discount period had expired. In this case, it might not necessarily have been unfair as we didn’t have enough information, but it tells us people aren’t sure what to do when they get a PCN and don’t agree with it.
